Meet the Team

Staying ahead means having the best team. They must be progressive in attitude and enjoy innovation. We choose our people carefully; invest in their training and development, and do all we can to keep them. After our customers, we value them most.

Working together to achieve our goals is a big part of what Concept is about — a champion team rather than a team of champions. Succeeding is about good team work.

Nick Baty  Managing Director

Nick_180w.jpg

Nick originally trained as a production engineer, however the desire to be more fulfilled creatively led him to the sign industry in his late twenties.

He started Concept 15 years ago, originally working from a small workshop in High Street, Lower Hutt. In the ensuing years he is proud to have been joined by a number of skilled and loyal people who have combined to grow the company to its present size of 12 staff.

Some of Concept’s current success is no doubt due to Nick’s desire to embrace the technological changes that the industry has seen in the last 15 years. His willingness to innovate and experiment with new technology means that Concept is always pushing the boundaries of what is achievable.

These days Nick’s official title is Managing Director, but you will as often as not, find him working on the ‘shop floor’, getting his hands (and clothes) dirty.

He has been Wellington Branch Manager of the New Zealand Sign and Display Association for 3 years and has recently been elected to the position of National President.

When not working, Nick enjoys DIY, the odd game of golf, and spending time with his wife and sons.

Fran Macdonald  Account and Customer Service Manager

fran

Fran has been with Concept since its inception 15 years ago, firstly in a part time position, moving into full time as the company grew.

She has a Bachelor of Commerce and Administration degree from Victoria University, and her strong work ethic combined with her meticulous nature means that she is an indispensable member of the Concept team.

While still overseeing the administrative functions of the company, she has moved more into an account manager’s role, following her realisation that people are more fun than numbers!

Fran thrives on the buzz of working with clients to ensure a successful outcome.  She particularly enjoys event and exhibition signage projects which require intensive management working to tight deadlines.

In her spare time,  Fran enjoys spending time with her 2 sons and husband and likes to get away from it all at her bach in the Kapiti Coast.

Shane Philip  Senior Account Manager

shane

Shane has been with Concept for 10 years. He is a qualified tradesman and has worked in the sign and display industry since 1994.

Starting as an apprentice sign writer, Shane finished his trade certificate and worked his way through the various production processes.

In his current role, this grounding and wide knowledge of production processes assists him hugely to identify potential issues before they arise, and to offer suggestions to avoid problems.

Shane manages a number of key client accounts and deals with numerous design agencies.

Shane is confident, personable and is dedicated to go the extra distance to get the job done.  He is organised, efficient and is meticulous in all endeavours.

Personally, Shane’s interests are as wide as his sign-making skills. He loves mountain biking, reading, working on classic cars and spending time with his family. He also harbours a passion for hunting out the best places to eat, shop and socialise. He also enjoys meeting new people and watching art-house movies.

Peter Skinner  Account Manager

Peter_180w.jpg

Peter has been involved in the signage industry since 1997. He’s been with Concept since April 2009.

Having worked in production, accounts and administration, Peter has acquired a wide knowledge of sign products and services. He has been an account manager for a number of years.

Peter successfully planned and managed the de-branding and re-branding of the Westpac Stadium for the FIFA U17 Women’s World Cup in 2008. The stadium needed a total signage strip-down to a ‘clean’ condition and re-build on completion of the tournament. This was huge undertaking involving working right through the night.

‘I am enjoying my role at Concept Sign & Display’, he says, using his experience to deliver the best possible solutions for both new and existing clients.

He particularly enjoys working on the larger projects where extra experience is needed to deliver results — even more so when he over-delivers on expectations.

Outside of work Peter’s equally busy, involved with his three children’s activities (aged 21, 19 & 16) and fitting in the odd game of squash.

Graham Winter  Account Manager

graham

Graham is an "old hand" in the local sign industry, having owned his own sign making business based in Petone for over 30 years (Signwork).

Graham's wealth of experience and knowledge coupled with his natural enthusiasm and energy make him a welcome addition to the team.

Away from work, Graham is kept busy at home by not only being a grandfather, but also a father of two new(er) kids, and playing around with his classic Morris Minor.

Mark Cleland  Production Manager

Mark_180w.jpg

Mark has been with Concept for 7 years and has 18 years experience in the signage and display industry covering production, management and administration.

At Concept he enjoys being the link between account managers and the production team. A key part of his role is to record and co-ordinate all contract specifications, provide quotations and specify production tasks to the production team. It’s a demanding and exacting role, but one he enjoys.

Mark meets daily with all relevant staff and is instrumental in ensuring that all facets of the processes are scheduled in a co-ordinated and timely manner.

Mark strives to create a balance between work, family and fun, so he enjoys spending time with his wife and two young sons. He is a keen follower of martial arts and enjoys the outdoors.

Alan Baty  Senior Print Operator

Al_180w.jpg

Alan holds a New Zealand Certificate in Quality Assurance and has spent over 20 years in quality assurance work in the manufacturing industry. He’d been 19 years in the engineering industry before joining Concept 4 years ago.

Alan operates all three of Concept's HP large format digital printers. As a good print operator Alan needs to be familiar with the use of various substrates, inks and laminates and uses his QA qualifications and experience to ensure Concept maintains consistently high standards across this critical aspect of its business. He constantly strives to maintain and improve standards in colour matching, print quality and related issues.

Print operating is a pivotal role and can require intensive concentration to avoid material wastage and maximise efficiency. When the pressure has been on to complete large projects, Alan has been available ‘24/7. He enjoys being ‘hands-on’ and the satisfaction of doing the best possible job, every time.

That’s not say he doesn’t enjoy his time off though.  Alan’s a keen motorcyclist, a pool and snooker player, and gets the most out of every moment with his family.

James Mounter  Senior Tradesman

James_180w.jpg

James has a trade certificate as a signwriter and has been in the industry for 22 years. He holds a site safety passport and is a licensed 3M applicator.

James considers himself an ‘old hand’ in the industry, beginning in 1986 as a school leaver and apprentice to Upper Valley Signs. There’s been a huge transition since then, he’s seen the industry progress from the era of brushwork through to computer-cut graphics and now into large format digital.

James joined Concept in 2008 and enjoys the wide variety of work. Meeting and often exceeding customer expectations is a challenge he enjoys.

Away from work, James loves music, in particular playing bass and electric guitar.

Chris Rogers  Graphic Applicator

Chris

Chris is a new recruit to Concept, starting in January 2012. He comes to us with an extensive experience in graphic application and sign installing.

Chris is looking forward to his future at Concept, and is keen to not only continue on his path to being a master of vinyl application, but learning all other aspects of the sign trade as well.

When he is not working, Chris is into making music and playing indoor soccer.

Peter Henderson  Signmaker

Pete_180w.jpg

Peter’s extensive 25 years of experience in the industry, combined with his steady and reliable attitude means that he is a valued member of the production team. As a relative newcomer to Concept (he has been here for 3 years) he has quickly proven to be an indispensable part of the crew.

He has a site safety passport, and is very experienced with all installation work.

He’s enjoying the new premises – which is assisting to consolidate and grow Concept's reputation as the capital’s premier sign company.

Off-duty, Peter enjoys off-road running, golf and following his 3 sons sporting endeavours.

Sam Abrams  Builder and Signmaker

sam

Sam combines his builder’s qualification with his eye for detail to produce a range of signage from router cut 3D LED signs to the manufacture of nation-wide point of sale display units.  Sam worked at Concept prior to his building experience but missed us so much he came back!  Sam’s experience and can-do attitude makes him particularly valuable for those tricky installations.
