Concept Sign & Display has been operating since 1995, when it was formed by Nick Baty and Fran Macdonald. Nick is the company’s managing director and Fran manages administration and finance. Both partners work full time in the business.
Beginning as one of several tenants in their old Alicetown building, Concept progressively took over space relinquished by other tenants as the business expanded. This was never to be a small back-street sign-making company. Nick envisaged his company becoming a major force in the industry, nationally. To do that, he knew instinctively that there would be three components that would underpin that future:
Customer satisfaction — a substantial and growing list of happy clients. He was right. Producing
designs and signs that had a ‘WOW factor’ grew the business organically.
Technology — keeping pace with the latest computer-operated machinery that would produce high quality sign and display products.
Skilled staff — people who knew what good signage was all about, how to best produce it and who knew what their customers wanted. They needed to have sound knowledge of superb graphic design, good materials and substrates, applications and life cycles.
It was only a question of converting those components into tactics. Concept acquired the intellectual property of Action Signs in 2008 and Sign & Display Ltd in 2009. The company invested heavily in graphic imaging and cutting equipment, along with developing a customised computer programme which would manage both production and customer relationship management. The programme, called Syscon, is now an integral part of the processing, production and delivery of each and every sign item.
The combined effect of highly sophisticated technology and skilled staff to operate it have proven to be pivotal factors in Concept’s success. The company prides itself on building the confidence of its clients through production of high quality products which are delivered on time.
Even after building close relationships with such entities as The Wellington City Council, AMP, BMW New Zealand, Fletcher Construction, Wellington Ruby Union, Wellington Free Ambulance, Wellington Airport, Suzuki NZ, Contact Energy and the Wellington Regional Stadium, not to mention a wide clientele of small and medium-sized businesses, Concept Sign & Display takes nothing for granted.
Continual improvement and investment is essential if you’re to stay at the top of your game. With no more tenants to replace and no spare space to acquire, Concept has invested in new premises in Petone, more than doubling their existing space. Concept moved into their purpose built facility in September 2010, and both they and their clients are enjoying the benefits of the new set up.
Not everything is spent on capital items however. The company involves itself in the community, sponsoring events that most companies don’t bother about — giving something back matters.
